CONTINUING EDUCATION DEADLINE NEARS

NASW WI Offers Numerous Continuing Education Options

The deadline for Social Workers to complete their required 25 Continuing Education Hours (CEH’s) is February 28, 2009. Of these 25 CEH’s, there must be four hours of training in ethics and boundaries, which must be received in a facilitated session. Up to ten of the CEH’s can be received through self-study programs.

NASW WI provides numerous options for all social workers to meet these Continuing Education requirements, including an exciting new lunch hour teleconference series, a Risk Management workshop sponsored by our national office and offered at a discount price, our expanded Home Study Audio program with four new titles and two additional dates our highly praised Ethics & Boundaries workshops, including one specifically for clinical social workers. Whatever your continuing education needs, NASW WI has an offering to assist you in reaching your goal.

Managing Your Malpractice Risk as a Social Worker

This session, developed especially for social workers, is sponsored by NASW Assurance Services, Inc. (ASI) and describes the most significant malpractice risks in social work today and numerous methods of mitigating and reducing one’s risk of being sued for malpractice. The presentation is intended for social workers in all settings and positions, not just the clinical, therapeutic mental health setting.   The session will cover key concepts in risk management, such as confidentiality and its exceptions, duty to warn, and informed consent.  The seminar will reveal the major reasons why social workers are sued and what you can do about those risks.  We will define what constitutes a malpractice case and emphasize important recordkeeping issues, guidelines for supervision, special tips for clinical and private practitioners, and brief you about your malpractice insurance, its special features and implications for your practice. The presenter is James H. Townsend, MHA, MSSW, ACSW.

NASW WI Chapter Proudly Announces its NEW Lunch Hour Teleconference Series

 Use Your Lunch Hour to Earn One Continuing Education Hour

With the deadline for the completion of Continuing Education requirements for Social Workers coming up on February 28, 2009, NASW WI has developed an exciting new program to allow you to earn continuing education hours (CEH’s) over the lunch hour without leaving your desk. Our new teleconference series is offers convenience combined with expert presenters, interesting and useful topics, and interaction with your peers, all for an affordable price.  

All workshops will be held from Noon to 1:00 p.m. Registrants will be emailed teleconference directions and handouts in advance.

These workshops are designed to meet the State of WI continuing education requirements for 4 hours of social work ethics and boundaries. The Content includes the presentation of ethical decision making models, case examples and ethical dilemmas.  Participants will engage in small group discussions.  Attendees are encouraged to bring to the workshop, or email to NASW-WI prior to the workshop at marcherstand@tds.net, ethical dilemmas from their work and practice.  Identifying information should be eliminated to retain confidentiality.

Home Study Audio Program makes it easy  to earn continuing education hours

Earn Up to 10 CEH’s • Four New Titles Added 

How would you like to earn continuing education hours while studying at home or in your car? The Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing allows social workers to earn up to ten (10) of their required continuing education hours (CEH) through self -study programs. NASW WI's Home Study Audio Programs are designed to meet the requirements for self-study courses established by the Social Worker Section of the Examining Board. Each Home Study Audio Program package comes  with CDs or audio tapes, handouts,  an evaluation form and a brief  exam.

BSW & MSW EXAM PREPARATION  WORKSHOPS SCHEDULED

If you are preparing to take your national licensing exam and would like to increase your understanding of what the test will be like and how to prepare for it, our popular BSW and MSW Exam Preparation Workshops are here to help. The workshops will be held on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the offices of Stowell Associates – SelectStaff, Inc, 4485 N. Oakland Ave. in Shorewood, WI. The MSW exam will be held from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the BSW exam will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The workshops will be led by Joanne Barndt, ACSW, LCSW, Clinical Associate Professor Emerita of the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at UW Milwaukee. She has substantial experience in child welfare, clinical, and health care settings. She has helped prepare hundreds of students for their exams.
